Fetching water is traditionally undertaken by women which is commonplace in many African countries. This will be done several times a day as water is required for drinking,cleaning utensils,general hygiene and watering of animals. The well in this image has a raised collar giving some protection from debris that might fall in. 

Women and children approach the village of Dandoutchi to attend a Croix Rouge mobile clinic. They will have been informed the clinic is taking place some weeks before by an advanced party of the Croix Rouge. The Chief of each village wil be responsible for communicating the information allowing local inhabitants to organise their day. For that reason the mobile clinic will arrive around midday giving them time to travel. Many will have walked a considerable way with their children.
